Push Pull Gauge for Sale

Take the guesswork out of ADA compliance by using a push pull gauge to measure the opening force of doors. To ensure that everyone can access public buildings, the Americans with Disabilities Act requires that doors in public structures be easy to open with minimal force. This Push Pull Gauge makes it easy to test if a door is ADA compliant by showing exactly how much force is needed to open a door.

ADA Standards for Maximum Door Opening Force

The ADA has set standards for the maximum amount of force that can be required to open a door. This ensures that people who are disabled or with low upper body strength are able to open doors and gates. According to the most recent version of the ADA Standards, the maximum force for pushing or pulling open a door or gate (other than fire doors) is 5 pounds (22.2 N) for interior hinged doors and gates, as well as for sliding or folding doors. (ADA Standards 404.2.9)

When measuring the opening force of a door you need to keep in mind that, “the maximum force pertains to the continuous application of force necessary to fully open a door, not the initial force needed to overcome the inertia of the door.” Also, these guidelines don’t apply to any of the door’s other mechanisms, such as “the force required to retract bolts or to disengage other devices used to keep the door in a closed position”.

Fire doors must be easy to open in an emergency, so the ADA standards require them to be as easy to open as the local jurisdiction will allow. The guidelines state, “Fire doors shall have a minimum opening force allowable by the appropriate administrative authority.” Using a Push Pull Gauge allows builders and inspector to measure door opening strength accurately. It also makes it easy to fine tune the doors opening mechanism to meet the ADA standard. This Push Pull Gauge can measure between 0 and 35 pounds.

Ensuring that doors in commercial buildings meet ADA requirements is extremely important for building owners. ADA violations come with expensive fines. The fine for first-time violations can be as high as $75,000 and subsequent violations would carry a maximum penalty of $150,000 each. The price of a Push Pull Gauge and the time spent inspecting doors is far lower than any ADA fine.

To get the accurate results, here are the operating instructions for this USA-made Push Pull Gauge.

How to Measure the Opening Force of a Door with a Push Pull Gauge

  1. Set the top (small) o-ring located on the plunger rod on zero, down against the instrument’s flange; or set the o-ring on the desired force.
  2. Holding the instrument firmly, press slowly against the door at a point approximately handle-high, and 30 inches away from the door’s hinges.
  3. Read the amount of force required to open the door on the plunger scale closest to the bottom of the small o-ring.
