Is a Fire Sprinkler required in the bottom of a elevator pit to a traction elevator per NFPA 13, 2013 and ASME 17.1?

Should the sprinkler in the pit have dedicated monitoring to the fire sprinkler and shunt the elevator upon activation or should the  fire sprinkler be removed.  Per NFPA 13 it is pretty clear that the sprinkler in the pit is not needed.  I am being told that the California State Elevator Inspector might still require the sprinkler in the pit.  Has any one ran into this before?
